Biography
“His musical and philosophical outlook on life make Iván Ortiz a versatile conductor who is highly appreciated by both musicians and audiences.”
Building on the years he spent with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra as principal horn, Iván Ortiz is an accomplished Spanish musician. His solid and comprehensive musical training, enriched by scholarships from the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Valencian Government, has driven him to take the step towards orchestral conducting, a long-standing ambition since his youth. George Pehlivanian, Marco Guidarini and Bertrand de Billy would become the main pillars of his training. Subsequently, his encounter with Joshua Weilerstein and Franck Beerman enabled him to serve as their assistant in productions such as Ariadne auf Naxos, Le nozze di Figaro, Parsifal and Die Zauberflöte.
His experience with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra makes him a highly regarded conductor among the musicians of the Ensemble of the Paris National Opera Orchestra, with whom he recently conducted Berio’s Folk Songs, Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder and Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks.
Convinced that art should be accessible to everyone, Iván Ortiz is part of a multidisciplinary project called “Opéra Kids”, based around singing, dance and theatre, with the aim of introducing children to opera and bringing it closer to them.
In January 2024, Iván Ortiz conducted the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra in the world premiere of Luis Serrano Alarcón’s CICLOS. The success of this concert earned him a further invitation for the 2024–25 and 2025–26 seasons. All this work is bringing him new opportunities with the Timișoara Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Goldoni Theatre in Livorno (as assistant to Maestro Guidarini), the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (Maestro Pons) and other renowned ensembles.
His extensive experience as an orchestral musician is an important source of knowledge in his work as a conductor, giving him a transversal view of the interpretative process to which few conductors have access. His musical and philosophical outlook on life make Iván Ortiz a versatile conductor who is highly appreciated by both musicians and audiences.
